With a razor-thin Republican majority in the House of Representatives, electing a speaker on Tuesday's swearing-in day has drawn more intrigue than usual. Meanwhile, in the Senate, history will be made that day.
More than a bit of palace intrigue surrounds the approaching Swearing-in Day for the Pennsylvania General Assembly
An email sent to House Republican members from the caucus leadership on Thursday claims several GOP members were approached by House Democrats with promises of future grants totaling hundreds of millions from Democratic Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro for projects in their districts in exchange for their vote for the Democrats’ choice for a speaker.
Democrats have made it clear their choice for speaker is Democratic Leader Joanna McClinton of Philadelphia, who if elected to that post would be the first woman – and first Black woman – to hold that position in Pennsylvania. She will hold the dual role until Jan. 17 when Lt. Gov.-elect Austin Davis, a Democrat, is sworn into office.
He said he will be watching the maneuvering and seeing where alliances form as occurred in 2007 when Democrats held a 102-101 majority at the start of session. At that time, Democrats devised a plan where six Republicans joined them to replace Republican Speaker John Perzel with another Philadelphia Republican, Rep. Dennis O’Brien. Then-state Rep. and now Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro had a hand in brokering that deal.
