Team will receive draft pick compensation if pair of pitchers sign long-term deals elsewhere
The Padres have protected themselves by extending qualifying offers to pitcher Blake Snell and Josh Hader. Both free-agent pitchers are expected to reject the offers, which would pay them $20.325 million in 2024, and sign big multi-year contracts this offseason. If that happens, the Padres will receive two additional selections following the fourth round of the amateur draft in July.
Hader, 29, is a three-time National League Reliever of the Year and by far the top closer on the market. He is also likely to top $20 million a year on a multi-year deal. Also on Monday, starting pitcher Michael Wacha declined his $6.5 million option and will become a free agent. Over the weekend, the Padres declined their options on Wacha and fellow right-hander Nick Martinez, both at two years and $32 million.
