Team plans at least a couple more interviews, has no timeline for determining Bob Melvin's successor
The Padres have interviewed three candidates and expect to interview at least two more in their search for a new manager. Tijuana native and Castle Park High alumnus Benji Gil interviewed Tuesday after the team interviewed internal candidates Mike Shildt and Ryan Flaherty last week. The 51-year-old Gil, who spent the past two seasons as a member of the Angels’ coaching staff, managed Mexico to the WBC semifinals in March and has been a successful manager in Mexico.
Former Padres player Phil Nevin, a longtime major league coach who managed the Angels the past season-and-a-half, is expected to speak with the Padres. But a formal interview has not been set. The Padres are replacing Bob Melvin, who they allowed out of his contract a year early to take the same job with the Giants. Melvin took his new job Oct. 24 and was officially announced as Giants manager the next day. That day, Shildt began his interview.
