There have been plenty of days this season where it seemed as if the Padres were not all that far from realizing their expected perch as a playoff contender.It instead seemed their uniforms should have included a mention of a new sponsor: Chico’s Bail Bonds.The Bad News Padres lost 12-2 to the Astros, completing a series loss and officially eliminating them from contention in the National League West.
It was, in the most generous assessment, the type of game that happens from time to time in a long season — and especially when an also-ran plays a team fighting to hold onto its top spot in its division in September. A lineup without Fernando Tatis Jr. or Manny Machado, who both were rested, failed to get runners home from first with less than two outs in the first and third innings.
The Padres had runners at first and second with two outs in the fourth inning before Rosario struck out and a runner at first with one out in the fifth before Soto grounded into a double play, on which he was slow to get out of the box as he watched the play unfold while carrying his bat for about his first half-dozen steps.
