Padres manager Bob Melvin played for Buck Showalter long before managing against him in the majors

A backup catcher over parts of 10 big-league seasons, Bob Melvin bounced from the Red Sox to the Yankees to the Angels to the White Sox in his final year in the majors in 1994. He hit the last home run of his career off Arthur Rhodes in his first game that year at Yankee Stadium, a three-run homer that owed a hat tip to the manager in the visiting dugout at Petco Park on Monday:“He used to explain to me why I was playing against a certain guy,” Melvin said.

The relationship has since graduated to peers who talk often. Both Melvin and Showalter were hot commodities on the managerial market this offseason, with the Padres hiring Melvin more than a month before the Mets brought in Showalter. He added: “It’s just a mutual respect. We’ve been doing it for some time. You try to take bits and pieces from everybody that you play for or watched from afar.”In a transactional move, left-hander Adrian Morejon and right-hander Michel Baez were activated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to the minors, the 23-year-old Morejon to Triple-A El Paso and Baez to Double-A San Antonio. Both were at the end of their allowed 30-day rehab window.
