After first All-Star game, Joe Musgrove will try to take advantage of a little break; David Bednar loves how trade turned out, too
pitcher Joe Musgrove shared an embrace with Cubs catcher Willson Contreras in the Dodger Stadium dugout.“This might not be the last time we do this,” Musgrove told him.
The expectation is Darvish will start Friday’s series opener in New York against the Mets with Sean Manaea to follow Saturday and Musgrove on Sunday. “I kind of got the chills,” he said. “If they would have said that a couple years ago, I would have said, ‘No way.’ Now we’re here, and it’s pretty cool.”
“I got a ton of questions from coaches throughout the week just asking me what happened, what was the switch and what happened,” Cronenworth said. “Talking through it and kind of looking back on where I was and where I am now, it’s pretty crazy.”The goal is not to “win” a trade. At least, not to be the only winner. It’s not bad when all parties feel like a deal worked out.
The Padres got the pitcher who has become their ace, and the Pirates got their closer. Both were in L.A. as All-Stars. Said Bednar: “It’s been unbelievable. I got an opportunity in Pittsburgh and kind of took it and ran with it. And, obviously, growing up a Pirates fan, it’s even more special. … Like Joe, I went home. So it’s really special. I have to pinch myself.”
