Padres rookie CJ Abrams at second base in first game action since July 22; Jake Cronenworth getting day off in Game 2 vs. Twins
Abrams hasn’t played since July 22 due to right biceps soreness. He is hitting .231/.280/.322 with two homers this year, but had been one of the team’s more productive hitters in limited action in July before he was scratched from the lineup July 23 in New York.
Without Cronenworth in the top third of the lineup, the Padres will look to capitalize on a hot hand as Eric Hosmer, Saturday’s three-hole hitter, is hitting .364/.440/.727 with two homers, two doubles, three walks and no strikeouts since returning from the All-Star break. Before the game, the Twins placed both outfielder Max Kepler and infielder Miguel Sano on the 10-day injured list, selected Tim Beckham’s contract and recalled outfielder Mark Contreras from Triple-A St. Paul.
