Parents raise concerns on difficulty of PSLE maths at ST’s smart parenting forum
SINGAPORE – Primary School Leaving Examination mathematics exams have been a source of angst over the years, with parents complaining about their difficulty. On Saturday, this issue was again brought up by parents at a forum organised by The Straits Times.
“We went through a simpler system – does that mean we are any worse than this generation? We are teaching kids too much, too fast,” the person added. Mathematics was a hot topic, with several people asking why the examination questions seemed so hard to solve. He pointed out that while an easy paper will give a child an impression that he or she has done well, it may not be helpful when it comes to making a recommendation as to which level of mathematics in secondary school the individual should take. The 2022 batch of Primary 6 pupils was the second batch to sit the PSLE under the new system, where pupils are given an achievement level ranging from one to eight for each subject, instead of grades such as A* to E.

Support over tea: LGBTQ+ groups launch new initiative to help struggling family membersSINGAPORE - Those who struggle to understand or find it hard to cope when a family member comes out as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) person will soon be able to get support at tea sessions organised by groups in the community. The initiative, called My Family Matters, is spearheaded by counselling and support group Oogachaga and co-hosted by Pink Dot SG and community groups such as Supporting, Affirming and Empowering our LGBTQ friends and family (SAFE), Free Community Church, and Inter-University LGBT Network. At a preview of the 15th edition of the annual Pink Dot SG rally, Oogachaga’s executive director Leow Yangfa said that it can be challenging for many - in particular for parents - when a family member comes out as an LGBTQ+ person. They may be unsure of what to do, feel worried, ashamed and alone, or are unable to talk about it with others. Mr Leow said that more parents have sought support for their children from Oogachaga in 2022, especially as discussions arose around repealing Section 377A, a decades-old colonial law criminalising gay sex. The law was officially repealed in Nov 2022. Read more at straitstimes.com.
