Don Yancey, 80, and the rest of the the Chalk It Up cooking team are ready to tackle feeding the 1,000 volunteers needed to make the 50th annual Pasadena Strawberry Festival proceed like clockwork.
Two fire pits that have red horseshoes as handles were ready to go earlier this week. Next to them was an oven that's seen better days that Yancey said is used to cook biscuits in the mornings.
All the equipment, fire pits included, that the team brought for the Strawberry Festival is its so-called"A Team unit," Yancey said. Chalk It Up has another trailer with one pit that is used for smaller events. Another trailer brought to the festival is filled to the brim with firewood. Will it be enough to keep the fires burning to provide food for 4,000 folks?More firewood will arrive in time, likely coming from Anahuac, where Chalk It Up leader Roy Clark lives. But this won't be just any firewood."People have walked in with turkeys and we've cooked it for them.
