Patrick Brown attacks Pierre Poilievre for backing ‘barbaric cultural practices’ policy via nationalpost

The leadership candidate for the federal Conservatives chose to make a first announcement on labour and immigration policy in Markham, at the end of a five-day visit in the Greater Toronto Area . The GTA is one of the key areas where the Tories want to make electoral gains.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, who announced on Sunday he would be also running for leader, wasted no time attacking Poilievre before he even announced his policy on economic immigration.Article content Speaking in Markham, Poilievre did not directly respond to Brown’s attack, but reiterated that “Patrick Brown will say and do anything”. That same message was pushed by Poilievre’s campaign on Sunday, as Brown launched his leadership bid.Article content

“My goal is to remove the gatekeepers, so newcomers earn bigger paychecks faster and Canada can fill high demand jobs, like doctors, engineers, mechanics, electricians, and others. That’s the goal,” he said in an interview with the National Post on Sunday evening.Article content “We saw, in the last year, job vacancies well over half a million. So we know that provinces are desperate to fill vacant jobs. And I believe that they will share the goal of getting immigrants into the jobs for which they’re qualified, more quickly,” he added.

Poilievre also promises to expand study loans to newcomers who need to take a few extra courses or tests to secure their credentials in their field of expertise. The Harper government had a similar program, but the Trudeau government put an end to it at the end of 2017.
