This landmark legislation introduced historic health care provisions, including a significant step forward in controlling prescription drug prices by allowing Medicare to negotiate prices on some medications. Even with insurance, prescription drug prices in America are out of control, and this newly-passed law could reduce prices of some cancer treatments and other top name-brand drugs through Medicare by as soon as 2026.
Lee’s “Protect Drug Innovation Act” pushes tired corporate talking points to achieve its real goal of benefiting the pharmaceutical industry, not patients. While the second of these sadly did not pass, the first and third are doing a great deal of good. But Sen. Lee’s bill is a stark reminder that we are still being forced to play defense against those who would weaken access to health care in the interest of ideology and corporate profits.
