A male pedestrian was fatally struck by a pickup truck Wednesday aftrernoon while crossing Bethel Road on Columbus' Northwest Side, police said.

Columbus police are investigating after a pedestrian was fatally struck by a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon while crossing Bethel Road on the Northwest Side.

The male was crossing Bethel Road between Olentangy River Road and Jasonway Avenue about 12:15 p.m. when a white pickup truck traveling west on Bethel Road hit him, police said. He was taken by medics to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:44 p.m., police said.No further information about the incident — including the identity of the pickup truck driver — was released by police, who said the investigation was ongoing.

Police were not specific about where the deadly incident occurred along Bethel Road between Olentangy River Road and Jasonway Avenue, which is a distance of about three-tenths of a mile. The area, located just west of Route 315, is largely commercial and Bethel is three lanes in each direction with additional left turn lanes.

There are marked crosswalks on Bethel Road at traffic lights at Olentangy River and Jasonway, and between them at a light where Olentangy Square is located on the north side of the road and Olentangy Plaza shopping center is on the south side. The speed limit in that area is 40 mph.
