In this city, we make cyclists beg for the most basic protection while we fail to enforce the law against common traffic violations.

The third instance that day was an Uber pulling right into the bike lane to let off a passenger on Laurier but going west this time, paying absolutely zero attention to me. I had to screech to a halt and as I stopped, the equally oblivious passenger came this close to slamming me with the car door. I was the one who yelled, and it wasn’t “have a nice day.”

It could be accomplished by adding bike lanes to Slater and Albert streets, both of which are one-way streets, and putting them to the left of vehicular traffic. Make left turns for cars illegal and boom, better safety for cyclists.Enough. We do not have to ask, let alone beg, for a way to get to where we’re going that doesn’t threaten our lives. We have a right to safe infrastructure. It’s time we insisted on it.
