Peloton agreed to pay a $19 million fine in a settlement over a treadmill recall, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The settlement follows the exercise machine company’s recall of the Tread+ and Tread treadmills in May 2021. Peloton recalled the treadmills due to reports of 13 injuries and one death.

“Peloton knowingly failed to immediately report to CPSC, as required by law, that its Tread+ treadmill contained a defect that could create a substantial product hazard and created an unreasonable risk of serious injury to consumers,”The federal regulatory agency said Peloton began receiving reports of incidents with the treadmills starting in December 2018.

CPSC accepted the more than $19 million settlement in December following a 4-0 vote. This is one of the largest civil penalties the agency has doled out.
