After several heartbreaking losses, Union Catholic finally got its signature Franklin Field moment.

Union Catholic coach Mike McCabe saw Devan Kipyego charging around the final turn and immediately thought the worst. And after years of so many close calls and what-could-have been moments at the Penn Relays, how could he not?

After so many near-misses, it was a signature moment for the Scotch Plains school as Brosnan, Jimmy Wischusen, Nick Givan and Myles Plummer secured their spot in Viking folklore. Moments after crossing the line first in a total time of 10:14.42, the Union Catholic relay team hoisted the Penn Relays wheel into the air. It was an elusive celebration.

“When Kipyego came around the corner, I was like are we cursed? But no, it feels really good,” he said. The emergence of sophomore Jimmy Wischusen was critical for both championships. In his first race back since January, Wischusen ran 3:11.44 and handed the baton off in second place.
