A year-long ceiling leak at a Jurong East HDB flat's activity area endangers residents, with moss forming and slip risks. Despite prior repairs, the issue persists, prompting temporary closures. A separate Yishun incident of falling concrete blocks underscores aging infrastructure worries in Singapore's HDB estates.
Many residents in Singapore are facing a persistent problem with suspected ceiling leak s in the activity area of an HDB flat in Jurong East . The issue has been ongoing for nearly a year, raising concerns about safety, especially for the elderly and children who could slip and fall due to wet and mossy floors.
A 74-year-old resident reported that the ground-floor activity area suffers from leaks, and the space is frequently used for morning aerobics sessions, sometimes attracting over a hundred participants. The need to avoid affected areas causes significant inconvenience. Another resident, aged 73, mentioned that previous repairs by the Town Council did not resolve the leak, suspecting it originates from water pipes in the upstairs kitchen or toilet since water seeps even when it's not raining.
The Town Council confirmed they first received feedback in May 2024 and identified the source after investigation. Temporary measures were taken, including anti-slip treatments and closures during renovation works in June last year.
However, the situation has worsened, prompting the need for direct repairs and a temporary closure of the affected area for public safety. In another incident, a Yishun HDB resident reported concrete blocks falling from the ceiling, causing cracks, highlighting aging infrastructure concerns in a 42-year-old building, with many residents reporting similar issues. The text also includes an unrelated social media comment about lack of rubbish bins and a brief mention of elderly poverty in Hong Kong and Singapore.
Nevertheless, the core focus remains on the Jurong East leak and the Yishun ceiling collapse, emphasizing the need for effective building maintenance and timely repairs to ensure resident safety
