Billingsley, the face of Christmas on TV, says his first lead role came in the ‘The Dirt Bike Kid,’ which was filmed in the Dallas area.
, he obsessed over a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle “with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.”, about a kid with a magic motorcycle who saves a hot dog stand from being taken over by a bank. The movie was filmed mostly in the Dallas area and premiered at the Inwood Theatre. Billingsley, who shared billing with Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon inBillingsley recalled temperatures being cold but the people warm in D-FW.
Are you OK with being recognized around Christmas? Surely, fans recognize little Ralphie in your blue eyes. . The genuine enthusiasm that fans bring, to me, is such a nice feeling. It’s just a very sincere, warm outpouring from people. So if you don’t like that, as I’ve often said, you’re probably in the wrong business. You want to be good and original and have scenes that are successful and score well on their own. But by the same token, you don’t want to do things that are going to damage the association with the original movie.
I can’t say enough great things about them professionally, and personally. Darren was so kind and thoughtful to me, as a young actor, and you don’t always get that. You don’t know what you’re going to draw and see who’s playing your parents or friends. Those decisions are out of your hands. And Melinda and Darren were tremendous. It’s a reason why we felt like a family because they made an effort to spend time and bond and connect and feel like everybody was part of the same core.
