The Trump administration may have publicly distanced itself from Peter Thiel’s recent call for the CIA to investigate Google for “seemingly treasonous” behavior, but apparently his war has only just begun

laying out his case against Google on the grounds of national security: The company, he claimed, was placing its machine learning operations in the hands of the Chinese government—in the heart of Beijing, no less—thereby posing an existential risk to American security and, implicitly, international dominance., laid out his nationalistic vision for American security—a vision that explicitly did not include Google’s DeepMind A.I. laboratory.

A little curiosity about China would have gone a long way, since the Communist Party is not shy about declaring its commitment to domination in general and exploitation of technology in particular. Of course, any American who pays attention and questions the Communist line is accused by the party of having a “Cold War mentality”—but this very accusation relies on forgetfulness and incuriosity among its intended audience.

Unlike many of his techno-utopian peers in the Valley worried about the right to privacy, Thiel does not believe that the very existence of A.I.-driven surveillance is a threat in and of itself, if it poses a threat at all. His investments, in fact, include several controversial companies that focus on data mining and surveillance, like Palantir and. And he's long been obsessed with China's unfair advantages when it comes to trade.
