More than 8,000 customers in San Francisco were without power Thursday morning after a PG&E outage swept through the the city.

in neighborhoods including Nob Hill, North Beach and Tenderloin, as well as in the Financial District and Fisherman’s Wharf, were reportedly without power Thursday morning. The company expects to have the power back on by noon, according to PG&E’s outage map.

A media spokesperson for PG&E said Thursday morning that the the cause of the outage is unclear. However,the outage seems to have been due to an underground transformer fire. The outlet reported that residents on Clay Street near Montgomery said they had seen “purple flames” and smoke coming from the transformer as the fire burned up its electrical wiring and circuits beneath the ground.

A company spokesperson said the outage had affected 9,454 customers in total and PG&E crews were working to restore power.
