“There definitely needs to be a statue, a street named after him, I don’t care what it is. You can’t do enough in my mind to honor what he did for the city of Cleveland,' Dawson said about Joe Thomas.

Dawson, who should have an asterisk next to his stellar stats for kicking in the whipping winds and inclement weather in Cleveland, believes Thomas deserves one too.

“Joe worked extremely hard, but I don’t know that anyone would have said he was a football meathead,” Dawson said. “Joe is super strong and obviously durable by virtue of his consecutive-play streak. He got all his work done, but you never saw him killing himself in the weight room. Furthermore, Joe never had a mental error, and you never really saw him studying. I don’t know how he did it, but you never questioned it.

“Didn’t matter who the pass rusher was, didn’t matter who our offensive coordinator was, didn’t matter the teammates around him,” Dawson said. “He had it handled. So literally the rock, just the anchor through tumultuous times and he was the one everybody could look to. And you just knew he was going to get his job done.”

Dawson said during those long, lean years in Cleveland, he, Thomas and Josh Cribbs all developed an enormous love affair with Browns fans and understood the assignment. “Great players make those around them better,” Dawson said. “They talk about legacy and that manifests itself in all kinds of ways. But when you can retire and see people in your position group just step right up and carry on the approach to the game, the respect for the city and then obviously, just perform when your team needs you the most, that’s a credit to Joe’s example.”

Fortunately for Thomas, he had former long-time Browns offensive tackle Doug Dieken to lean on. Dieken, the Browns’ radio analyst during Thomas’ career, was always around the team until he retired last year, and always there for Thomas. The two became incredibly close, and spent a lot of time together.
