Comal County Crisis Center gets new building after April fire

The inside of a former New Braunfels senior center is seen Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022. The Comal County Crisis Center recently purchased the facility and surrounding land to replace their previous building which was destroyed by fire earlier in the year. The crisis center plans to renovate some portions of the building as well as build new residential housing on the site.

Strentzsch said Thursday morning, while standing in what was the old senior center thrift shop room, that while she would never have wanted the old building to burn down, she’s taking the opportunity to build a new one from the ground up in stride. The fire injured no one, but it did displace the organization. Since April, the center has moved five times to temporary homes, relying heavily on local churches and other nonprofits to provide temporary housing for its clients who are escaping dangerous home situations.

Strentzsch said the building needs several renovations and updates, and it should be ready to be partially operational by April of next year. That means the crisis center will be able to begin providing educational services, legal support and other forms of help for women, children and families in need.
