During the springtime when the moon is full, spectacular lunar rainbows become visible near certain waterfalls 🌈
Lunar rainbows are both exciting and challenging to shoot, according to the photographer, because they depend upon so many things happening simultaneously.They’ve got a lot of names: Lunar rainbows. Moonbows. Spraybows. Space rainbows. Lunar Spraybows.
Even better news: the moonbow viewing season is upon us. Clear spring evenings with a full moon overhead offer the best chance to catch a glimpse or snap a photo, as well as specific conditions that have been allowing humans to observe moonbows for centuries. Mammoth Lakes photographer Carter Murphy was lucky enough to be at Rainbow Falls as the Milky Way came into view above the waterfall. As darkness set in, a faint white arch appeared in the mist and then took on color, becoming vibrant and creating one of the most beautiful moonlit scenes the photographer had ever experienced.These days, at Victoria Falls on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, tour outfitters are offering Lunar Rainbow Tours during the full moon.
“At least 90% of the moonbow photos I've captured over the last few years have been from the Valley floor, in the general region of the Yosemite Chapel and Sentinel Bridge” says, a landscape photographer from San Luis Obispo. “But in July of 2019 I shot one of my favorite photos of the event from way up high at Glacier Point.”
