Picking and ranking leaders in the automated driving sector can be tricky
In my primary job as a principal analyst with Navigant Research, I cover the mobility industry and produce a number of reports that examine the market potential for various technologies including automated driving. One of our most popular reports is the annual. Like most reports that we produce it has evolved over time, starting off looking just at traditional automakers. In recent years we have expanded eligibility to include companies that don’t necessarily manufacture vehicles.
One of the challenges of creating such a ranking report is deciding who to include and how to score them. With more than 50 companies now holding permits to test automated vehicles on California roads, plus dozens more companies globally, this is a daunting task. We can’t realistically include everyone in part because we don’t have enough information on many of them.
That means leaving out companies that are just producing components or subsystems. So companies like Velodyne, Luminar or Innoviz don’t get included. Similarly, companies that are focused on developing software like Perceptive Automata or AImotive don’t make the cut. Even some of the big tier 1 suppliers that do a lot of the integration or make subsystems for manufacturers like Magna and Denso don’t qualify.
Case in point are the two companies currently seen as the leaders in developing the compute platforms for automated driving, Nvidia and Intel. In 2018, Intel was only included as part of the partnership it has with BMW and Fiat Chrysler to develop a full system. This year, they are included in that but also got a separate score based on a parallel development of a distinct system that Intel and its subsidiary plan to market along with a mobility services platform.
