'There have also been times, while playing Super Mario Party, where I accepted that he needed to steal stars from me to seal the win for himself.'

When I first met my boyfriend, we were on a cosplay cruise going around New York City sponsored by a group of LGBTQ+ nerds called Geeks Out. It was 2018 pride weekend, and he was dressed as Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid. My mustache and I were Fire Mario. We complimented each other’s outfits and started talking about our favorite Disney movies and video games.

Neither of us will ever experience car racing in real life, but revving our engines before zooming around animated tracks delivers similar thrills—especially playing online against real people all over the world. When either of us take any of the top three spots over international players, we bask in the Olympic-caliber glory and celebrate each other’s accomplishments.

Working like this helps us let the other person know that we support each other’s goals and are willing to make sacrifices when necessary to achieve them together. It’s about establishing a foundation of trust and a willingness to compromise.

Slowing down is totally not a bad thing, BTW.I’ve never been good at pacing myself. When I met my boyfriend, I fell fast and hard. When I get a new game, I have a tendency to hit the ground running and not stopping until the end credits roll. I logged an almost embarrassing amount of hours playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons when quarantine first started.
