The country’s top lawyers have condemned Scott Morrison’s attack on the NSW corruption watchdog as “neither correct nor constructive” after the prime minister doubled down on his criticism of the body and took a swipe at the legal community.publicly disagreed with his stance on the issue
Expanding on his criticism of the ICAC on Tuesday, Morrison said he had “never been a fan” of how it operated, accusing the agency of having “destroyed people’s reputations and careers before it’s even made a finding”. The Australian Bar Association responded swiftly, describing Morrison’s remarks as an “attack” on the country’s more than 6000 barristers who ensured Australians had legal representation, including through pro bono services for those who could not afford it.
Morrison’s denunciation of the ICAC also drew a rebuke last week from one of the agency’s three commissioners, Stephen Rushton, SC, whoThe issue of a national integrity commission has become a key platform in the federal election campaign, after Morrison last month abandoned his 2019 election promise to establish a federal body, saying his government would only revive the issue in the next parliament if Labor backed its.
“It will be acceptable for that body to operate according to how it sees it should operate and not take directives from politicians about how it operates,” Albanese said.
