Community turns out to rally against HISD takeover

Community members gather in front of Hattie Mae Thursday evening in protest of potential takeover threat.Dozens of people protested the potential state takeover Thursday outside the district's central office in northwest Houston.

Parents, students and politicians said the B-rated district of 270-plus campuses has come a long way and should not be taken over just because of a few struggling schools. They held signs that read “Stop the take over” and chanted, “TEA stay away” and “Our school, our stay.” Other students voiced concern about how a takeover might affect classroom instruction. Ivona Washington, a student at Lamar High School, moved to Houston from Los Angeles roughly a year ago. During her time at HISD she felt that most of her classes taught to a standardized test, more so than her other school.Teachers also shared a similar sentiment. Nicolas Abazajian, a ninth grade teacher at Sharpstown High School, focusing on test prep doesn’t give students the tools they need for the future.

Several politicians also spoke, saying the TEA takeover would be more about partisan politics than what was best for students. Many alluded to that it showed the administration was out of touch with what is happening in schools.

When will sports betting be legalized? - Texas Wants to KnowWhen will sports betting be legalized? - Texas Wants to KnowSuper Bowl LVII is just over a week away, but Texas residents won't be able to place bets on the game -- at least not legally. Some state lawmakers are working to change that, but they could face political hurdles just to get their bills to a floor vote. State Sen. Carol Alvarado (D-Houston) has filed SJR 17, which would create a Texas Gaming Commission and allow for legalized casino gambling in the state, while a yet-to-be-introduced bill back by the Sports Betting Alliance will focus more specifically on sports betting. But some experts, like SMU political science professor Cal Jillson, think the bill will face obstacles, particularly in the Texas Senate, while Robert Kohler, a lobbyist and consultant for the Christian Life Commission of the Baptist Convention of Texas said he thinks gambling just isn't high on the list of priorities for Texas voters or lawmakers.
