By 2025, 50% of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system.
Porsche may be playing catch-up in the electric performance car segment, but when it comes to electric crossovers, it's preparing to eat Tesla's lunch. The German manufacturer announced on Tuesday that the next generation of the Porsche Macan will be all-electric.
With more than 90,000 vehicles produced each year, the Porsche Macan is one of the best selling luxury crossovers on the market. The next generation of the compact SUV will be based on the Premium Platform Electric architecture, which means it will share the same 800-volt fast-charging technology as the upcoming all-electric Taycan. The addition of a battery pack will put it on even footing with yet-to-be-released Tesla Model Y, and may even beat it to market.
To accommodate its aggressive electric vehicle strategy, the company has been expanding its manufacturing facility in Leipzig, Germany. According to Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG, the Macan will be one of many vehicles to get the battery in the near future:in electric mobility, and by 2025 50% of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system. Nevertheless, over the next ten years we will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimized petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars.
