By increasing spending in the General Fund by nearly $2 million over 2023, the Porter County Council has managed to bring all its employees up to the midpoint of pay in the private sector, as promised, as well as give everyone an additional 3% raise for the 2024 budget. Accommodating the hiring of new employees, however, didn’t make the cut.
The final reading of the 2024 budget was adopted unanimously Tuesday night by all seven members of the council. “I appreciate all the hard work of the elected officials and the department heads,” said Council President Jeremy Rivas, D-2nd. “I know not everyone’s happy. I see some snarling out there and some dirty looks.
” Hot on Cox’s heels was Porter County Adult Probation Office’s Chief Probation Officer Melanie Golumbeck who told the council her office hasn’t increased its staff in a decade, but the population it is responsible for supervising has increased by 30%. She was asking for one additional officer. With the added responsibility of pretrial supervision, Adult Probation supervises 3,000 people, including violent offenders and child abusers, with just 14 probation officers.
