Power Faults Cause Disruptions to NEL and SPLRT Services

Two separate power faults at Sengkang Depot Substation led to disruptions on the North East Line (NEL) and Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT) on August 12 and 15. Investigations are ongoing to determine the root causes of the faults, and remedial measures are being implemented to prevent future occurrences.

Two power faults occurred at the voltage transformer for Switchboard 2 at Sengkang Depot Substation, disrupting train services on the North East Line (NEL) and the Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT) on August 12 and 15. According to a joint statement by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SBS Transit (SBST), the first fault on August 12 involved a high current surge due to a problem in the voltage transformer.

Subsequently, a cable connecting to the transformer dislodged, allowing current to continue flowing despite the blown fuse. This high current surge damaged Switchboard 2, and because the two switchboards were interconnected, Switchboard 1 disconnected from the system to prevent further damage. Services on both the NEL and SPLRT were gradually restored that day using a backup power supply. However, the extensive damage to Switchboard 2 meant it couldn't be immediately repaired. As Switchboard 1 remained undamaged, it was reconnected to resume normal service the following morning. LTA and SBST reported that repairs to the voltage transformer and Switchboard 2 were completed on August 16.On August 15, a power cable fault occurred on the SPLRT system. Since Switchboard 2 was still out of service from the August 12 incident, this fault caused the entire network to lose power. LTA and SBST stated that they are continuing to investigate the cause of the cable fault. They are also testing 28km of cables throughout the SPLRT network to assess their condition. These tests are expected to be finished by August 23 as they can only be conducted during engineering hours. As a long-term solution, LTA will be implementing a secondary power supply source directly from the SP Power Grid, scheduled to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025 as part of the Sengkang Depot expansion. LTA is also collaborating with SBS Transit to make further upgrades to the power supply for the NEL and SPLRT
