I texted the person I knew could identify with my feelings the most, Express-News photographer Sam Owens. We worked together in Uvalde several times, and she’s spent more time working there than anyone I know. Together, we acknowledged the sadness we felt about Uvalde families’ anguish. We weren’t there to shop. Our 7-month-old twin grandbabies had an appointment to get their first photo with Santa. We worked in vain to get the babies to smile. Even the Santa Claus, who lamented he had worked 11 hours that day, looked a bit miserable.

Beyond the lessons in preventing the type of horror that happened there, we can learn more from Uvalde families about humanity and love in response to distress and sorrow.
