UK cities heading for gridlock, warns parliamentary committee urging switch to leg-power.
“It is believed this is in part due to the ease with which people can travel by car within the town, which makes car travel a more convenient or otherwise preferable option even for short trips,” concluded the council.
Pedestrians and cyclists take up far less space than cars, meaning it is possible to move a much greater number of people through a space if they choose to travel on foot or by bicycle. In addition to passenger movements, in urban areas there is increasing potential for moving goods by cargo bike. This reduces the pressures on the road network.”
As with any large-scale infrastructure changes, this will be expensive. In the long run, it will prove more affordable to put in that infrastructure now as the costs of not doing so will be very high … We are still at a point where the majority perspective seems to be that the roads are for cars, not people, and the government follows suit.
Burnham told the MPs about Greater Manchester’s plans for a world-class cycling and walking network and that “we cannot put pressure on people to get out of the car until we give them an alternative.”
