Thousands spend Greater Sydney's first weekend out of lockdown at the races as the government increases the crowd capacity for upcoming racing events including Melbourne Cup Day.

Mr Anderson said discussions to make the event happen in a safe way had been going on for some time with the state government."The people of NSW have done an incredible job rolling up their sleeves and getting vaccinated, allowing us to welcome more people back to iconic events and get our economy firing again," he said.

"It feels great to be able to get out and socialise with friends and just have a good time," one punter told the ABC. "It did feel a little bit strange getting out of flat shoes and putting heels on. Mixed feelings to be out in big crowds but I'm pretty excited."
