The King further broke with tradition with the design of the coin. Just six coins were made as part of the trial set, the Royal Mint said, and the coin is one of only two in private ownership. The remaining four are in museums.

"The Edward VIII Sovereign is one of the rarest and most collectible coins in the world, so it's no surprise that it has set a new record for British coinage," Rebecca Morgan, head of collector services at The Royal Mint, said."We were delighted to be able to locate such a special coin for our customer, and bring it back to the UK to make history once more."
