LEMBANG, Indonesia: Sejak dibuka pada 1923, Observatorium Bosscha telah menjadi magnet bagi para astronom dari seluruh dunia yang ingin menguak misteri alam semesta.Dari bangunannya yang berusia seabad, bintang dan benda langit lainnya semakin redup terlihat. Cahayanya berusaha keras bersaing dengan benderang lampu yang terpancar dari hotel, restoran, dan taman hiburan di sekitarnya. Perbukitan Lembang yang dahulunya sunyi, kini memang telah berubah menjadi daerah wisata yang sangat berkembang.

Pengamatan langit malam, kata dia, hanya bisa dilakukan setelah pukul 23.00, dengan catatan langitnya cerah. Itu pun, para peneliti hanya bisa mengamati bintang pada sudut lebih dari 30 derajat di atas cakrawala. Jika teleskopnya diarahkan lebih rendah, benda-benda langit tidak terlihat sama sekali akibat cahaya terang dari kota Bandung dan penginapan di sekitarnya.

Daerah dengan polusi cahaya tinggi memiliki langit yang terang benderang, menyebabkan bintang-bintang terlihat redup atau bahkan tidak terlihat sama sekali."Ada observatorium di Tokyo, di Paris, yang sekarang sudah menjadi museum, tidak lagi menjalankan fungsinya," kata dia, seraya menambahkan bahwa komunitas peneliti di Indonesia berusaha semampunya agar Bosscha tidak mengalami nasib yang sama.Ketika Bosscha dibangun pada 1920-an, lokasinya sangat ideal untuk pengamatan bintang.
