Blizzard, now in Microsoft’s stable, is trying something rather…unique with Diablo 4. They are putting the game on bothand certifying it for Steam Deck as of today. Overwatch came to Steam eventually, but a long, long while after the release of the original game .
This Diablo 4 release corresponds with season 2, Season of Blood’s launch, the vampire-themed season coming to the game today. In interviews, Blizzard has said that the idea here is to expand the audience of the game, and my sneaking suspicion is that at the very least, the “live” aspects of the game may be underperforming, and this is a way to boost those numbers. Steam Deck in particular seems like a perfect fit for Diablo 4.
Why not do this from the start? Well, there is the Tim Sweeney-hated 30% cut that Steam takes, while that is not the case when you are using your own internal launcher like Blizzard has been. And Diablo 4 has aof microtransactions, for a high price, and that means a lot of revenue they’re handing off to Steam. But if it boosts they’re player numbers significantly, it may be worth it.It’s really eye-popping to see this happening with Diablo 4 just a couple months after launch.
I still enjoy playing Diablo 4, but I think there was too much assumption that the Diablo 3 seasonal model would carry over to Diablo 4 and expand that audience. I’m not sure it has, and evenPerhaps this season, which does add endgame activities, and this Steam release, which should increase its audience, will be the answer. We’ll find out soon enough.
