Pierre-Auguste Renoir is often thought of today as a painter of smiling nudes in idyllic surroundings. But during his lifetime, he provoked a surprising amount of controversy. From his early impressionist works to his late experimental paintings featuring deliberately misshapen figures, Renoir’s anti-academic style often made him a target of the critical establishment.
The painter’s risk-taking is on display in “Renoir: The Body, the Senses,” which opens June 8 at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass....
