Report: Warriors' deal to acquire Gary Payton II seems to be in jeopardy
Payton’s trade was never going to be the panacea for this season’s woes. Steph Curry is still out for an extended period of time, the team’s frontcourt depth is abysmal and it loses two out of every three road games. His return can’t immediately undo any of that, but it at least brings some optimism.
Of course, that optimism is based on what he was capable of doing in a Warriors jersey last year. This year is quite different for both sides. Payton has been too absent to fully prove he’s capable of returning to that form, and the Warriors’ title defense has been meager so far. Maybe the 30-year-old being back in blue and gold will bolster himself and the team, but his tenure could just as likely be derailed once again by injury.
