Warnings of hundreds of thousands of dead Americans apparently wasn’t enough to sway the president on social-distancing
the whole time. Then, of course, came the third shift: A week of suggestions that the measures public health officials had recommended were “worse than the problem itself” and plans to pack churches and have the workforce “raring to go” by Easter.
Perhaps Trump was swayed, a week later, to extend his aspirational date to relax recommended restrictions by the sheer volume of projected deaths that could directly stem from such a move—he is, after all, a sucker for eye-popping numbers.
Indeed, much of Trump’s coronavirus response—from his infuriating attacks on governors who have the temerity to ask for resources, to his constructive decision to keep federal social distancing guidelines in place longer—seems borne of self-preservation.
