At a time of nature crisis driven by unparalleled rates of biodiversity loss, a new interconnected system to monitor biodiversity around the world is urgently needed to direct and focus conservation action.

"The lethal combination of habitat loss, the exploitation of natural populations, pollution, and climate change is causingrates not seen since the last mass extinction 65 million years ago," said Prof. Andrew Gonzalez, Liber Ero Chair in Conservation Biology at McGill University, and co-Chair of GEO BON.

"We lack the means to monitor these impacts fast enough across most areas of the planet.

Researchers design switch-like proteins inspired by transistorsResearchers design switch-like proteins inspired by transistorsScientists from the University of Washington have designed custom proteins that can switch between two fully structured conformations. By coupling this molecular motion with a binding event, these proteins serve as biological counterparts to electronic transistors, opening the door to new applications in smart therapeutics, environmental sensing, and more. The study has been reported in the journal Science

Researchers unearth a new process by which algae pass on nutrients to their coral hostResearchers unearth a new process by which algae pass on nutrients to their coral hostResearchers have identified a new pathway by which sugar is released by symbiotic algae. This pathway involves the largely overlooked cell wall, showing that this structure not only protects the cell but plays an important role in symbiosis and carbon circulation in the ocean. The findings were reported in the journal eLife on August 18, 2023.
