A water conservation order is still in effect for many across the West Shore and other parts of Cumberland County after an oil spill leaked into the Conodoguine
After being alerted to the issue, Pennsylvania American Water contacted the Department of Environmental Protections.
They traced the leak to an underground storage tank at the Cumberland-Perry Area Career and Technical Center.Until the oil is cleaned up, the Silver Springs Water Treatment Plant will remain closed and water will be used from the West Shore Water Treatment Plant and the emergency interconnections from neighboring water companies.Senior Director of Operations at Pennsylvania American Water, Joe Woodward, says that reopening the treatment plant could take a couple of days.
“We're working with the Department of Environmental Protection on a sampling plan of what types of samples they'd like to see us take and get the results back to make sure there's nothing that's going to be harmful in the water before we turn that plant back on again,” he explained. As for the cause of the storage tank leaking, DEP says “the investigation is still ongoing.”
