The latest movie from Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski chronicles the journey of a donkey through both cruel and kind encounters with humans.
Donkeys are having a moment in the movies.
In"The Banshees of Inisherin," Jenny, a pet animal so beloved by Colin Farrell's character, Pádraic, that he would kill for her, steals every scene in which she appears. Still, Jenny isn't the star. She has to take a back seat to the increasingly fraught feud between Pádraic and Colm, played by Brendan Gleeson.
That's not the case EO, a donkey so central to the focus of the new film from renowned Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski that its name is the title. But it's more than mere screen time that makes EO, who's in just about every scene, such a winning character. EO, portrayed by six gray, male and female Sardinian donkeys, will both steal and break your heart.
Skolimowski, who co-wrote the script with his wife Ewa Piaskowska, tells the story of a sad-eyed donkey, whom viewers first meet as a performer at a rundown circus somewhere in the Polish boondocks, who begins his journey after animal-rights protesters picket the circus and creditors shut the whole thing down. That means he's taken away from the one human who has showed him affection, a dancer named Kasandra .
From then on, through a series of lucky breaks, escapes and fateful encounters, EO comes into contact with the full range of human interactions, from kindness to cruelty. And it's to EO's credit that not one of the two-legged creatures comes anywhere close to being as memorable as the four-legged one.
