The Saskatoon Summer Players put on their first performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at Remai Arts Centre on June 20, 2023. The show, which features lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice and a book by Linda Woolverton, is full of big full-ensemble numbers that showcase everybody’sThe play also features a few songs that aren’t in the Disney movie, adding moments of depth to some of the characters and their relationships, and offering something new for even the most familiar audiences.
When Belle’s father Maurice is accosted by wolves in the woods, there is a genuinely menacing moment as dancers with masks and glowing eyes leap out from the shadows. The moving chairs, operatic wardrobe, flirtatious feather-duster and optimistic little teacup are incredibly well-costumed and played with complete commitment, while Cogsworth and Lumiere are a fantastic comedic duo, keeping time with one another’s quick-fire comments while lighting a fire under every scene they spend on stage — chewing the scenery whileThis advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.
