Normally I feel just fine about that. Looking at art is about understanding what you’re looking at, but it’s also about making connections with it, and some of the most meaningful can be totally idiosyncratic. But with African art, that’s almost all that’s ever been done, at least in terms of Western appreciation.
For all the details on offer here, though, plenty are missing, either because they’re unknown or because they don’t fit the exhibition’s focus on aesthetics. Pair of headdresses .
