Rice students made this 1950s salon an institution. Now, university development plans force them out.
Frank Jr. Burge answers a call at his family owned salon on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022, at Beautique Salon in Houston. After owning the business for over 60 years, Frank Burge is now handing off the family business to his son Frank Jr. and his daughter Susan Burge as they plan to relocate in 2024 to a new location in Houston. When Frank and Ginny Burge opened Beautique Day Spa & Salon in Rice Village in 1956, 27 other salons operated between Kirby Drive, Bissonnet Street and Main Street.
Through it all, the one constant has been the Burge family. A Frank Burge still sits in the salon most days, but now it's Frank L. Burge., Frank and Ginny's son. They chose Rice Village because it was close to Rice University and the Medical Center, and the bet paid off. The business coming from students was a"godsend," Frank Burge said. In the 66 years since then, the Burges, now in their 90s, have watched Rice Village grow around them. Kirby went from a two lane road to a major thoroughfare, grocery stores and gas stations made way for trendy retailers and restaurants and parking meters were installed across the area.
In the early 1980s, Frank Burge hurt his back falling off a ladder, so his son left the University of Houston to work in the salon full-time. About five years ago, Susan joined him. They now run most of the day-to-day operations of the salon and spa for their parents.lay off staff. But loyal customers from across Texas and even across the country kept them afloat.Ginny, Frank, Susan and Frank L. aren't the only multi-generational family coming in and out of Beautique day to day.
"They just have a wonderful way of working with everybody," she said."They're all great. The camaraderie, the kindness. They're like a big family."The Burges knew the end of their 25-year lease on Beautique was coming up in the second half the 2020s, but this past spring, Rice University —. It took about two months to find a new space, and when they did, it was essentially the only option that met their needs — close to the original location and with ample parking, according to Lunden McGill and John Frazier of real estate brokerage firm Baker Katz, which handled tenant representation.
