A strong showing in Eurobasket and his on-court energy have earned Usman Garuba more...
After a variety of injuries marred his rookie campaign, Rockets center Usman Garuba has emerged as a pleasant surprise this season.Rockets coach Stephen Silas has lauded center Usman Garuba for the energy he brings on the court, something Garuba says he has done since he was very young. He figured out that if he plays with energy, then points, rebounds and everything else tangible will follow.“In Spain, we take huge naps,” Garuba said. “We call them.
Garuba appeared in 13 of the Rockets’ first 15 games, averaging 4.5 points and 5.7 rebounds on 62.2 percent shooting in 15.7 minutes per game. The only games he did not play in were the first two of the season, when Bruno Fernando started at center. On defense, Garuba is a switchable small-ball center with the quickness to alter shots on the perimeter. On offense, he has been effective as a short roller, screener and passer. He has played alongside the starting backcourt of Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green as well as with second-unit guards, and says he adapts his strategy to suit whoever is sharing the floor. Porter and Green, for example, command more time on the ball.
A left ankle sprain kept Garuba from competing for the Rockets in the Las Vegas summer league, limiting his opportunity to develop chemistry with his teammates. But he spent almost the entire summer in Houston before and after his injury working with the coaching staff.
