An advocate for stricter immigration laws, the former Arizona Senate president and main sponsor of the controversial SB 1070 died Thursday.

A sheriff’s deputy turned state lawmaker who was the architect of one of Arizona’s most concerted modern-day crackdowns on undocumented immigrants died Thursday. Russell Pearce was 75.

But the Republican Party’s majorities in the Legislature have only narrowed in the years since Pearce’s departure. And he will be remembered not only for rallying the party’s conservative base but for inspiring a generation of activists who have emerged to counter just about everything he stood for. So, Pearce joined the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, serving for 23 years. It was a rough beat at times. Pearce was once shot in the chest by a gang member during the 1970s. But he rose through the ranks, eventually serving as chief deputy to Joe Arpaio. In fact, Pearce claimed credit for one of the more visible initiatives of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office: setting up Arpaio’s tent jail.

The bill banned sanctuary cities in Arizona and required local law enforcement officers to make an effort to determine the citizenship or immigration status of people they had reason to believe may not be in the country legally.
