The spacecraft, which will remain on the Moon for a year, will be tasked with 'taking (samples) and analysing the soil' as well as 'conducting long-term scientific research', Russian space agency Roscosmos said.
Russia launched its first probe to the Moon in almost 50 years on Friday , a mission designed to give fresh impetus to its long-struggling space sector, which has been also hit by sanctions since the conflict in Ukraine.
Roscosmos expects the probe to enter a"100km high lunar orbit" on Aug 16 and land on the Moon north of the Boguslawsky crater on Aug 21, the agency said in a statement. According to Russian space expert Vitali Iegorov, the mission is the first time that post-Soviet Russia has attempted to place a device on a celestial body.
"We are guided by the ambition of our ancestors to move forward, despite difficulties and external attempts to prevent us from doing so," Mr Putin said at the Vostochny Cosmodrome last year.
