Russia welcomes Trump's acknowledgement of the current situation in Ukraine and expresses willingness to discuss security guarantees.
Russia has indicated a positive shift in US President-elect Donald Trump 's stance towards the conflict in Ukraine, perceiving his acknowledgment of the 'realities on the ground' as a welcome development. The Kremlin expressed its openness to a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Trump, which Trump himself suggested would occur 'very quickly'.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on Tuesday that Moscow was prepared to thoroughly examine Trump's proposals for resolving the Ukrainian crisis once he assumes office on January 20th. Lavrov highlighted Russia's appreciation for the incoming administration's increased recognition of the current situation in Ukraine, citing remarks made by both Trump and incoming National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. He emphasized: 'I just don't think it's realistic to say we're going to expel every Russian from every inch of Ukrainian soil, even Crimea. President Trump has acknowledged that reality, and I think it’s been a huge step forward that the entire world is acknowledging that reality. Now let's move forward.' Trump recently acknowledged Moscow's longstanding opposition to Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO, a stance he articulated as understandable given that 'Russia has somebody right on their doorstep'.Russia currently controls approximately a fifth of Ukraine after nearly three years of war, maintaining that any peace agreement must factor in this reality. In September 2022, Moscow proclaimed four regions of Ukraine, which it only partially controls, as integral parts of its own territory, a move widely condemned by the United Nations General Assembly as an 'attempted illegal annexation'. Lavrov asserted that Russia was willing to engage in discussions regarding security guarantees for the country now known as Ukraine, but emphasized that Moscow would require its own assurances against potential threats on its western borders with Europe. He suggested that security guarantees for Kyiv would only be truly effective if provided by the United States. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to advocate for Ukraine's NATO membership, a proposition that Russia vehemently rejects, claiming it initiated the war to prevent this scenario. Kyiv harbors concerns that Trump's withdrawal of US military support, in pursuit of his oft-repeated pledge to swiftly conclude the conflict, could compel Ukraine into making substantial concessions.
