Rutgers injected itself into the Big Ten title race picture with another monster upset of No. 1 Purdue, this time at Mackey Arena.
from beating Ohio State’s elite offense in a building where Rutgers had never won before, a victory that would have placed the Scarlet Knights at the top of the league standings on Tuesday morning with a 3-0 record.
The body-banging put Rutgers in foul trouble for most of the game — Pikiell said in a post-game radio interview that things were “stacked a little bit against us” after seven of his players finished with at least three fouls — but it also held the Boilermakers to one of their worst offensive performances of the season.
“He’s been terrific,” Pikiell said of his veteran point guard. “He’s a leader. Even down the stretch, he wanted the ball. He makes good decisions. He has six assists and zero turnovers in this kind of environment with eight rebounds and four steals, so he did everything. He’s a stat stuffer anyways, and he’s a winner and he showed all those things tonight.”
The Maryland native then created space with a pump fake before knocking down the biggest shot of his 14-point night, then helped his team make two defensive stops in a frantic final 14 seconds to complete the upset.
