Rutgers stuns Indiana with late game-winner as NCAA Tournament chances live on

March Madness 2022 oddsThe Scarlet Knights once again used defense and toughness to pull out an unlikely victory. After trailing by seven at the half, Rutgers used a swarming and collapsing 2-3 zone to stifle the Hoosiers in the second half, then switched back to man-to-man to confound them even more in the final seconds.

The win is the Scarlet Knights’ fifth consecutive over the Hoosiers . It improves their road record to 4-9, their record in Quadrant 1 games to 6-5 and keeps them in the race for a top-four finish in the Big Ten standings, which would earn their first Big Ten Tournament double-bye in program history.

The split-second tantrum by Mulcahy almost proved costly. If he had simply taken the foul and gone to the line, the game probably was over. Instead, Indiana retained possession after the free throws and guard Parker Stewart’s 3-pointer from the corner with 12 seconds remaining tied the game, 63-63. Harper then deflected the desperation inbounds pass from under the Hoosiers’ basket to secure the victory.
